Emergency shelter PARTNERSHIP

     February 12 – February 18, 2018

For one week in February, St. Mark’s will offer a home to some of the homeless men and women of northern Westchester—and we need your help! We are looking for many volunteers and donors, each contributing a little, to provide our guests a welcome reception and some of the comforts of home. For these men and women struggling to find a way out of homelessness, ESP is a life-saving source of help and hope—and you can be a part of it.

The 2018 ESP season has hosted about 25 people per night so far. This year has seen an increase in the number of women who need shelter with up to 4 seeking a safe place to sleep on any given night (many nights there is only 1). In years past, it has been rare for there to be more than 1 female ESP guest over the course of a full shelter season. How does ESP work? Partner synagogues and churches, like St. Mark’s, take turns hosting for one or two weeks each winter, November through March. Each night, guests are picked up by bus at the Mount Kisco Police Station and transited to a host shelter. There they are greeted with a warm supper, and, on the first night of their stay, a packet of toiletries, fresh socks, and hand towels. Lights are out by 10 pm, with a paid staffer and congregational volunteer remaining overnight with the guests. Up at dawn, guests are provided a nourishing breakfast, and a brown bag lunch to tide them over to the evening’s next meal.

How can you help? Prepare a hot meal for guests (e.g., pot roast, chili, chicken casserole with sides) Help greet guests and serve the evening meal Prepare and pack breakfast and/or lunch bags Overnight with guests Donate lunch meats, cheeses, small juice boxes, fresh fruits, loaves of bread, protein bars Donate travel size toiletries, including small soaps, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and toothpaste We purchase additional items, so cash donations are always gratefully received. ESP week provides a wonderful opportunity for all of us to come together to renew personal relationships with fellow parishioners---and to give witness to the love of God for all people.

Please help support this important ministry. A sign-up sheet is posted in our rear lobby.
